HAMILTON, ALEXANDER

A one page, printed document signed by Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington, September 21st, 1791. A circular document with “Treasury Department” printed at the top reads, “...It being necessary to ascertain correctly the state of the public monies in the several Custom Houses. I enclose you a form of a return of bonds… while it is my desire that you regularly transmit…” Three continuing paragraphs detail how payments are to be made by the Collectors of the Port to the Treasury. The concluding paragraph states, “…all foreign vessels are to be admeasured whenever they arrive in your district…” Collection of duties at various ports were an important source of income for a young nation, and this document perfectly showcases Hamilton’s involvement in the development of America’s financial system. In recent years, items of Hamilton’s have greatly appreciated in value. In excellent condition, with a dark, clear signature. $9,500.
