LINCOLN, ABRAHAM

Abraham Lincoln autograph note signed, Jan. 21st, 1865. "Submitted to the Secretary of War. A. Lincoln, Jan. 21, 1865." This note, written entirely in Lincoln's hand as President, appears on the reverse side of one page of a three page letter written to Lincoln by Governor John Andrew of Massachusetts. In the letter, the Governor asks that Bvt. Brig. General Horace B. Sargent be appointed to the office of Assistant Secretary of War. Andrew states that Sargent served as his senior aide-de-camp and as a Colonel in the First Mass. Cavalry before being severely wounded in the Louisiana Campaign. He recommends him for any position the President may need. Sargent did not end up receiving the appointment but did live to the age of 86. Governor Andrew was a staunch abolitionist and was instrumental in establishing the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The 54th Regiment was comprised of Black soldiers, famously including the two sons of Frederick Douglass. $8,500.
